Mesa Verde Writers Conference
For Published & Aspiring Writers
July 13 -16, 2023
This conference is sold out!
Immerse yourself in natural beauty in this wild place as you work with award-winning writers. Listen to your inner voice, take risks, and break from routine. This is a generative conference and work you create may become a finished story, personal essay, novel, or poem.
Mancos, Colorado, the gateway to Mesa Verde National Park, is an unspoiled place. Sunsets here range from peach rose to vermillion. Most days you’ll spot mule deer and it is not uncommon to see elk or fox. You may see people on horseback on the trails. We offer you a chance to stay in a serene valley surrounded by mountains. Even in summer, there may be snow on the peaks. Southwest Colorado has beckoned writers and artists for centuries.
Andre Gide said, "One doesn't discover new lands without consenting to lose sight of the shore for a very long time." As you lose yourself in the never-ending vistas, traffic, deadlines, and the noise of your life will disappear. Writing and creativity can flourish.
The ability to begin and sustain creative work requires time. Let us provide this weekend for writing, dreaming, networking with other writers, and gazing at the stars in a Western sky framed by mountain peaks. This workshop is put on through Mesa Verde Writers Conference.
A Sense of Place: Abstract Painting
with Diane Williams & Chuck Potter
July 21- 23, 2023
There are still spots available!
Whether a world traveler or a homebody, a sense of place naturally finds its way into our painting. In this workshop we examine the concept of “place” by painting the essence of landscape – both internal and external. You will practice abstract acrylic painting techniques that are connected to the spirit in nature. Abstract painting is often misconstrued as an unrecognizable style of painting where no standard rules of perspective, color theory, or composition exist. We dispel that myth. Students will learn acrylic painting
techniques including preparing the surface; the 3 stages of applying paint and finishing techniques. In addition, they will learn glazing, collage and sanding, block printing and geli plate techniques. You will learn to harness energy from nature and release it into your work, finding a sense of place.
Diane Williams and Chuck Potter hold Master of Fine Arts degrees in Studio Art and Consciousness from John F Kennedy University in Berkeley, CA. They studied at the University of Hangzhou China,
incorporating calligraphy, traditional Chinese landscape painting and Chinese medicine with western art practices. Their works can be found in corporate, public, and personal collections nationally and worldwide. dianewilliamsart.net

The two-day workshop will enable participants to experiment and explore, as well as create a final piece.
Nancye Culbreath is from Monticello, Utah. Canyonlands, Arches National Park, Monument Valley, and Natural Bridges are practically in Culbreath’s backyard. These locations offer a wealth to paint and many of her paintings reflect canyon landscapes.
